The portrait of General James McPherson is prominently portrayed at right, whom was the second highest ranking Union officer killed during the Civil War. McPherson was killed during the Battle of Atlanta, facing the army of John Bell Hood, his old West Point Classmate. McPherson unknowingly rode toward Confederate Skirmishers, thinking it was his old battle line, and instead of surrendering when given the chance, wheeled his horse around and was mortally wounded by a shot to the back.
