PCGS Currency Gem New 65 PPQ.A prohibitively rare and visually stunning $1000 gold certificate, and according to the T&P census, one of only three gem quality examples graded by PCGS Currency believed to be extant. While PMG has graded three 64s they have yet to certify any higher. This particular example shows a deeply inked impression of the design, four boardwalk margins along with vividly printed inks and crackling fresh paper. The all important overprint is seen in its original yellow-gold brilliance. The seal and serial numbers are all nicely embossed. The universal back design (which is also found on the Federal Reserve Note) is quite sharp with a dark green hue generating a lovely contrast to the frosty white paper.<p>On April 5, 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt issued Presidential Executive Order 6102 which required all citizens to deliver all gold coins, gold bullion & gold certificates to a Federal Reserve Bank or member bank of the Federal Reserve System by May 1, 1933 or face a fine &/or imprisonment. The new series of small size gold certs in $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, & $1000 denominations issued in 1928 had only just made their debut & were still mostly in the possession of the Federal Reserve & its member banks, so when FDRs Order 6102 was issued, the vast majority of 1928 gold certificates were withdrawn & destroyed.
