Superbe à Fleur de coin.Les pièces de 100 litrai de Syracuse, de la valeur d’un double décadrachme, sont parmi les plus belles pièces d’Or grecques jamais produites. Elles sont proches des décadrachmes signés par Kimon ou Évainète, notre exemplaire étant dans le style de ce dernier. L’or utilisé pourrait venir du trésor du satrape perse Pharnabaze ramené en 409-408 av. J.-C. par Hermocrate dont la fille épousa Denys l’Ancien ou encore provenir des 300 talents de rançon obtenus du général carthaginois Himilko après son siège raté de Syracuse en 397-396 av. J.-C. Au droit, la tête d’Aréthuse est du plus beau style. Elle porte ses bijoux et sa chevelure remarquable est retenue en arrière par un sakkos décoré d’étoiles. Au revers est représenté le premier des travaux d’Hercule, étouffant le lion de Némée, et représentant une allégorie des guerres avec Carthage.
